About Shinsui

Tucked away at 11-35 Honmachi in Kurashiki, Okayama, Shinsui Restaurant is the kind of place that instantly makes you feel like you’ve discovered a local favorite. The moment you step inside Shinsui, the warm izakaya atmosphere stands out. It feels relaxed, lively, and welcoming without trying too hard. Whether you are stopping by after exploring the historic streets of Kurashiki or simply looking for a comfortable dinner spot, the restaurant creates an easygoing experience that encourages guests to slow down and enjoy the evening.

One thing that makes Shinsui special is its casual dining style. The restaurant focuses on dine-in service, which adds to the authentic izakaya feel. Instead of rushing through a meal, people gather around the table, order a few small plates, and spend time sharing food and conversation. The menu pairs especially well with a cold beer or another alcoholic drink, making it a great choice for anyone who enjoys the social side of Japanese dining culture. The small plates also give visitors the chance to sample different flavors throughout the meal rather than sticking to just one dish.

Another reason many travelers and locals appreciate Shinsui is its location in Kurashiki’s charming Honmachi area. The surrounding streets already have a traditional and peaceful atmosphere, and the restaurant fits naturally into that setting. After walking through the neighborhood, sitting down inside Shinsui feels comfortable and familiar. The restaurant does not rely on flashy decorations or trendy concepts. Instead, it focuses on creating a friendly environment where the food, drinks, and atmosphere work together naturally.

For anyone wanting a more local and relaxed dining experience in Okayama, Shinsui offers a simple but memorable izakaya setting that captures the charm of Kurashiki perfectly.

We sat at the bar and watched the master chefs prepare authentic Kansai cuisine with their expertise. Everything was carefully prepared. The oden was perfectly cooked and seasoned, not salty at all. The cabbage roll, daikon, age-tofu, kamaboko, and konyaku were absolutely delicious. We also ordered ten-don and soba. All top notch. We highly recommend that you visit this excellent restaurant and hope that you enjoy and appreciate the experience as much as we did.

If you’re in Kurashiki and you don’t go here you’re missing out big time! Great service and the food was outstanding. We tried so many things and loved them all but the grilled pork ribs were so full of flavor - that dish is one of our favorites of the trip to Japan. They used the rib cap meat, not the bone-ribs and marinated it in miso before grilling. Incredible. Oh and get the cream croquette and cold tofu were both must-get dishes as well. The texture if the tofu is unlike any I’ve had. So creamy it melts in your mouth.

Never tasted an omelette better than here. Food was so good we keep ordering more. The atmosphere was warm; with music playing in the background, surrounded with regulars having friendly chats and watching the oden stove blowing steams is a memory I’d like to keep from my travel.
